Three Dangerous Myths About AI Therapy

Myth 1: “AI can replace a therapist.”
Reality: The study identified 15 ethical risks, including lack of contextual adaptation (giving generic advice), poor therapeutic collaboration (dominating conversations and reinforcing false beliefs), and deceptive empathy (using phrases like “I understand” without real understanding).

Myth 2: “Chatbots are unbiased.”
Reality: Researchers saw evidence of unfair discrimination - biases related to gender, culture or religion. Without human oversight, these patterns go unchecked.

Myth 3: “A crisis bot will save me.”
Reality: The most alarming category was lack of safety and crisis management. Chatbots often refused to engage with sensitive topics, failed to refer users to immediate help, or provided dangerously indifferent responses.

Unlike human therapists, AI systems operate without accountability. There are no licensing boards to reprimand them, no laws mandating referral protocols. As Ellie Pavlick, a computer science professor not involved in the study, noted: “It’s far easier to build and deploy these systems than to evaluate and understand them.”
