Vitamin K2 Raised Testosterone-In Rats

đ§Źđ The most important words in a supplement headline are usually the ones removed from it.
Vitamin K2 in the MK-4 form increased testosterone production in male rats and testis-derived tumor cells in experimental research. That is mechanistically interesting. It is not evidence that MK-4 raises testosterone in men.
The experiment
Researchers found that dietary MK-4 increased testosterone in rat blood and testes without changing luteinizing hormone. In isolated testicular cells, MK-4 also increased testosterone production in a dose-responsive pattern. Vitamin K1 did not show the same effect.
The proposed pathway was direct: MK-4 activated PKA signaling, which influenced CREB and increased expression of CYP11A1-an enzyme involved early in converting cholesterol toward steroid hormones. Blocking PKA stopped the effect in the experimental model.
That mechanism is the headline. The species is the boundary.
Why animal evidence matters-and misleads
Animal and cell studies help identify pathways and decide what deserves human testing. They cannot establish an effective human dose, absorption at the target tissue, long-term safety, or a meaningful improvement in symptoms.
Testis-derived tumor cells are also not a healthy human endocrine system. A pathway responding in a dish proves possibility under those conditions. It does not prove a result in your body.
What this study does not prove
- That MK-4 increases testosterone in healthy men.
- That K2 treats clinically low testosterone.
- That higher doses produce better human outcomes.
- That vitamin K1 is inferior for every health purpose.
- That combining K2 with other supplements creates a hormone protocol.
The practical correction
Vitamin K has established roles in normal blood clotting and bone-related biology. Food sources and individual requirements vary. But buying K2 specifically as a testosterone booster asks one animal study to carry a human promise it never made.
Who must be cautious
Vitamin K can interact seriously with vitamin K-antagonist anticoagulant therapy. Anyone using blood-thinning medication should not change vitamin K intake or start a supplement without the prescribing clinicianâs guidance. Persistent symptoms of low testosterone deserve properly timed testing and medical interpretation.

- Was the study performed in humans?
- Were participants similar to me?
- Was the outcome a laboratory number or a meaningful health improvement?
- Was the dose tested for safety?
- Has the result been replicated?

When a headline says âincreases testosterone,â add the missing phrase: âin whom, at what dose, for how long, and compared with what?â Twenty seconds of skepticism can prevent months of expensive self-deception.
