Wearables can be useful for patterns in movement, heart rate, and sleep. The trouble begins when a consumer device stops feeling like a tool and starts sounding like an authority: “You are stressed.” “You recovered badly.” “Today is a low-readiness day.”
In a 2025 study, researchers followed nearly 800 young adults for three months and compared Garmin Vivosmart 4 data with reports of how participants actually felt four times a day. Smartwatch stress readings showed almost no meaningful relationship with self-reported stress; in roughly one-quarter of cases, the direction was opposite. Leiden University’s summary of the peer-reviewed research also notes that excitement and stress can produce similar bodily signals.

A sensor detects physiology. An algorithm translates it. A screen gives the translation a clean number. That polished number can feel more objective than your own experience-even when the context is missing.
Your watch is like a security camera with no audio. It sees everyone running, but cannot tell whether the building is on fire or the surprise party just started.
Use the score without letting it use you
- Feel first, check second. Before opening the app, rate your energy, mood, and tension in one sentence.
- Ask what else fits. Elevated arousal may reflect exercise, caffeine, anticipation, illness, heat, or excitement-not only psychological stress.
- Follow trends, not verdicts. One red score is weak evidence. Repeated patterns paired with your real-world context are more informative.
- Run a blind weekend. Wear the device but hide readiness and stress scores until evening. Notice whether your day changes when the number cannot lead it.
What the study does not mean
It does not prove that all wearables are useless or that you should ignore concerning symptoms. The research tested a specific consumer device and found that passive sensor data did not substitute well for moment-to-moment self-report of stress and fatigue. Wearables are not medical diagnoses.
