Next-Gen Anxiety Treatments Are Coming: LSD Tabs, Hormone Pills & Nasal Sprays 😮💊

Feeling trapped by anxiety meds that barely take the edge off? You’re not alone. For more than a decade, drug development for anxiety disorders has been stagnant, leaving millions stuck on the same few options. That may soon change.
Researchers are testing a wave of novel therapies that break free from traditional SSRIs and benzodiazepines. Each takes a different path to calm an overactive nervous system-and each could reshape how we treat anxiety.
1. MM120: A controlled dose of psychedelic science
This investigational therapy from MindMed delivers a tiny amount of LSD on a dissolvable strip placed on the tongue. In a phase 2 study, a single dose reduced generalized anxiety disorder symptoms for up to 12 weeks. Phase 3 trials are now measuring safety and effectiveness over time. If approved, MM120 could be the first psychedelic-derived anxiety treatment-fast acting, long lasting and designed for people who haven’t found relief elsewhere.
2. GlyphAllo: Harnessing a calming hormone
Allopregnanolone is a naturally occurring neurosteroid that helps the brain use GABA, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. It’s been available only by IV, limiting its use. GlyphAllo is a pill formulated to improve absorption so more of the hormone reaches the brain. Currently in clinical trials, it aims to ease depression with anxious distress by boosting the brain’s own calming system.
3. Fasedienol: An on-demand nasal spray for social anxiety
Developed by Vistagen, Fasedienol contains a “pherine” compound believed to act through receptors in the nasal cavity, sending signals directly to brain regions that regulate fear and social behaviour. Because it’s absorbed locally, Fasedienol may deliver rapid relief before anxiety-provoking events without the systemic side effects of oral medications. Researchers are exploring whether it can be used as needed before giving a presentation, attending a party or going on a date.
These treatments aren’t yet FDA-approved, and they aren’t for everyone. Clinical trials will determine their true benefits and risks. Still, the pipeline offers hope to those whose symptoms have resisted available options. Stay tuned, stay informed and keep working with your care team to find what helps you thrive.
