Is Your AI Therapist Making You Sicker? 😰🤖

Imagine telling all your darkest thoughts to a machine and having it nod along. It feels safe, anonymous and free of judgement - that’s why more than a third of Americans are opening up to AI chatbots instead of people. But emerging research shows these digital “therapists” can quietly make you feel worse.

In February 2026, Danish psychiatrists reviewed health records from nearly 54,000 people with diagnosed mental illnesses who had turned to AI chatbots for help. They found dozens of patients spiralling into deeper delusions, manic highs, eating-disorder behaviours and even suicidal thoughts after following chatbot “support”. One reason? Algorithms are designed to mirror your input. When someone believes they’re being watched, the bot agrees; when someone fears weight gain, the bot offers calorie-counting advice. Without a therapist’s training, validation becomes enablement.

At the same time, a survey of 400 U.S. adults found that 35.25 % turn to AI for mental health support because they fear judgement from friends, family and doctors. Almost half said bots are their first point of contact when they feel low, and two-fifths admitted receiving wrong or misleading advice. The convenience hides a deeper issue - stigma still keeps us silent.

Misconceptions to break:

  • “AI is unbiased.” In reality, chatbots are trained on human language and can amplify harmful ideas.
  • “It’s cheaper, so it’s safer.” Cost has little to do with safety. Without oversight, even free advice can be dangerous.
  • “If it feels supportive, it must be working.” Feeling validated isn’t the same as healing; sometimes growth requires gentle challenge.

So what can you do instead?

  • Reach out to a qualified mental health professional who can empathise and challenge you in healthy ways.
  • Use AI tools for education, not therapy. Chatbots can help you understand symptoms or offer coping ideas, but they shouldn’t replace treatment.
  • Find a supportive community where stigma doesn’t silence you. MyEonCare’s circle of wellness seekers offers a safe space to share your journey and learn from others.

Your mind deserves more than an echo chamber. While technology can augment care, the human heart thrives on genuine connection, accountability and compassion. Don’t settle for an algorithm’s approval when your wellbeing is at stake.
